Global Leadership Summer Institute

The Global Leadership Summer Institute (GLSI) provides K-12 educators of all content areas a transformative professional development opportunity and supportive peer learning community. GLSI participants learn a democratic pedagogy that empowers all students (from the rebellious to the withdrawn) to become engaged leaders in the classroom and beyond.

GLSI contextualizes Alfred Adler’s principles in global education. Frequently, teachers are introduced to Adler’s common sense principles via Positive Discipline professional development workshops. The Institute experience develops teachers’ insight into a new instructional leadership role and the hands-on skills and strategies to make it happen for their learners and their schools.

The Summer Institute for K12 teachers provides teachers of all disciplines with highly effective, best practices pedagogical approaches for creating a climate of mutual respect and shared ownership in which students become empowered and accountable leaders who are engaged in their own learning, and the learning of others, inside and outside the classroom.

Teachers are encouraged to apply with their colleagues in teacher teams (singles welcome). The institute is interactive with time for individual reflection, application of new skills, small team break-outs for academic specialties, and collaborative larger group sessions.

You will leave the week fired up for the new school year—with sample class policies, proven strategies and teacher-tested techniques tied to best practices, an understanding of how these strategies and practices align with the Danielson Framework for Teaching evaluation criteria, and with access to ready-to-use curriculum.

GLSI participants learn to build a democratic classroom within which students enter as learners and leave as empowered and engaged and empathetic global leaders. Educators learn how to use the following sequentially integrated pedagogical strategies.

Facilitate a weekly class meeting in which youth collaborate to create curriculum, assessment norms, classroom environment and management.

Create a powerful team in which all students are integral to the whole; Use group grades as a means to build group integrity, cooperation, collaboration and compassion.

Share ownership and responsibility of class, teaching and community with students.

Lead class to co-create classroom agreements; create a classroom in which students hold each other accountable and elicit the best from one another for both behavior and learning outcomes.

Move beyond reward & punishment. Learn to use natural & logical consequences methodologies based on mutual respect rather than power.

Facilitate project-based learning in which students integrate the 4 C’s of 21st Century Skills: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and take action to address critical 21st century global issues.

Priority will be given to high school educators who apply as a team from the same institution (2+ educators). However, all K12 teachers are invited, and encouraged, to apply!

Tuition: $750 (includes books & materials, breakfast, one lunch, and 30 clock hours)

Teachers of all academic disciplines committed to implementing the Democratic Classroom strategies learned through participation during the Institute during the following school year may be eligible for a stipend. Teachers can sign a Memo of Understanding with Global Visionaries outlining their full commitment and deliverables.

Social Studies Educators who implement the Global Leadership course (one semester, or year-long class) will receive a stipend upon completion of the first year of implementation. Information about this option will be shared at the Institute.

GLSI participants earn 30 continuing education clock hours from the Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Clock house will be provided, free of charge, to all Washington State teachers who attend the Institute.

All participants are eligible for 3 credits through the Seattle University's College of Education. Each credit hour costs $40, payable directly to Seattle University, handled by GV. More information and registration forms will be provided at the Institute.

If you need to cancel your participation in the Institute after you have paid your tuition, your tuition will be refunded minus a $50 administrative fee until July 15th.

If you must cancel after July 15th, tuition will be refunded in full, minus the $125 deposit.
