The Advanced Leadership Program is comprised of First Year Program alumni who participate in one of the following five teams. This program is designed to deepen participant's understanding of social justice and environmental stewardship while creating a community of supportive leadership for the first year participants.
The program begins in late August and runs approximately one year (depending on your specific team).
As an Advanced Leader, each participant commits to the following:
- Attend the parent and participant orientation
- Support First Year recruitment efforts and selection process
- Attend weekly meetings, depending on your team
- Participate in fundraising efforts to support the Global Visionaries scholarship fund
- Attend the one-night weekend retreat
When you apply, you will have an opportunity to select one of the following five teams to join. Please note that each team has a different meeting schedule; some teams meet more frequently than others. If you have specific questions about the meeting schedules, please email Mario Flores.
Board of Directors
Members of this team represent the youth voice in GV governance and development initiatives. These leaders serve as a bridge for their peers of the Advanced Leadership Program and their colleagues on the adult-board. They keep each other informed about each other’s goals to develop of a stronger culture of philanthropy, and ultimately a growing and sustainable organization. Board of Directors meet once a month for two hours and attend additional team leader meetings once a month.
Junior Leader
Junior Leaders guide and co-mentor first year participants with the Culture Night Leaders through the spring, summer, or intensive program in Seattle and Guatemala. They primarily facilitate the kick-off retreat, pre-trip retreat, and also participate in additional leadership trainings for all travel leaders. This team will meet three times per month for two-hour meetings.
Culture Night Leaders
These leaders facilitate and support first year participants through their Global Visionaries experience in Seattle, both pre-and-post immersion. They host conversations at each culture night around environmentalism, team building, fundraising, cultural awareness, and reverse culture shock. This team will meet three times per month for two-hour meetings.
Pro-Justice
This group prepares and facilitates social justice and diversity workshops for the Seattle community and first year participants during weekend pre-trip retreats. When not facilitating, the team continues to learn about specific issues that address social justice while also developing opportunities for community engagement. This team will meet three times per month for two-hour meetings.
Team Leaders
The team leader position is an optional, additional leadership opportunity. Team Leaders represent one member of each team to serve as mentors for their peers. They assist the GV Program Manager in outreach, communication, and planning. They also support the Board of Directors in providing monthly program updates that are presented during meetings. Team Leaders meet for two hours per month in addition to their regular team meeting schedule.
